Contests Spotlight Review-Journal Efforts

May 21st, 2012

The Las Vegas Review-Journal has received a number of honors recently, including first-place awards for editorial writing and headline writing in the Best of the West 2012 journalism contest.

Best of the West is a contest for newspapers, magazines and news websites in Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wyoming. It receives about 1,500 entries each year.

Glenn Cook won first place for his editorial “RTC bus contract goes round and round,” criticizing the extended process of negotiating the Las Vegas public transit agreement.

“This piece begins with an adaptation of a childhood ditty, the kind of approach that can often go awry,” the judge wrote. “But Glenn Cook is creative and clever enough to pull it off. He then switches gears, explaining in plain English a somewhat complicated set of circumstances. The rare combination of creativity and clarity makes it a winner.”

George Riggle took first place for headline writing with a package of headlines, including “Loving sports fan can be rah deal” on Xazmin Garza’s column about her football-loving fiancé and “Sultan of smack Harper simply being 18-year-old” on a column about the outcry over hitter Bryce Harper, who blew a kiss at the pitcher after blasting a home run.

“All of the headlines in the entry from George Riggle of the Las Vegas Review-Journal are spot-on for their tone,” the judge wrote. “He shows a great talent for using words in clever ways that add depth to his headlines. In no case does he sacrifice accuracy or accessibility for his wordplay.”

“Loyal readers of the Review-Journal know the talents and skills of our staff,” said Managing Editor Charles Zobell. “Our primary concern is to be the most dependable source of information in Southern Nevada, but it adds to our satisfaction when our peers recognize our efforts.”

Matthew Crowley took second place in his circulation category in the American Copy Editors Society’s 2011 national headline contest. Newspapers with circulations between 160,001 and 240,000 fell into this category.

Judges made the following comments on Crowley’s work: “Crowley clearly has fun writing headlines, and that translates into fun for the reader. The last-minute suspense of ‘Tick, tick, tick, tick … tax’ was very effective, as was his literary twist with ‘Bags packed, engines hum, ready turkeys, here we come.’”

Crowley finished first in the same circulation bracket in 2007.

Several Review-Journal staffers received an honorable mention for the series “Deadly Force: When Las Vegas Police Shoot, and Kill” in the American Bar Association’s 2012 Silver Gavel Awards for Media and the Arts.

Those honored were staff writers Lawrence Mower and Brian Haynes, special correspondent Alan Maimon, photographer John Locher and project editor James Wright.

The Silver Gavel Awards recognize outstanding work that fosters the American public’s understanding of law and the legal system.

Three first-place awards, including one for advertising excellence, went to the Review-Journal in the California Newspaper Publishers Association’s Better Newspapers Contest 2011.

The contest recognizes the achievements of the best newspaper professionals in California and Nevada. More than 3,000 entries are received each year.

Jessica Ebelhar won first place in the news photo category, and Justin Lau won first place for best house ad/advertising campaign.

The Review-Journal also took second place for best website.

Review-Journal staffers received several other awards in the Best of the West contest.

Third-place honors went to Editorial Page Editor John Kerr for editorial writing, sports columnist Ron Kantowski for special topic column writing and Locher for sports photography.

In the general interest column writing category, John L. Smith tied for third place.

Videos by Locher and Justin Yurkanin have been nominated for Emmy Awards by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, Pacific Southwest Chapter.

ASSEMBLY: Campaigns hot in SB County contests

May 21st, 2012

In San Bernardino County’s safely Democratic 47th Assembly District, Joe Baca Jr. wants to return to the job he held for a single term several years ago.

And in the county’s safely Republican 33rd Assembly District, Assemblyman Tim Donnelly is trying to avoid becoming a one-term lawmaker himself.

Opposing Baca Jr. and Donnelly are a mix of elected officials, business owners and others running on the June 5 ballot. The districts’ strong partisan leanings and new, top-two primary system make it possible that the November elections will be a repeat of the primary campaigns.

The redrawn 47th Assembly District closely resembles the current 62nd Assembly District and includes Rialto, Colton, Fontana and part of San Bernardino. The new district, though, picks up Grand Terrace, drops the area around San Bernardino International Airport and reaches north to Devore.

Baca Jr., the son of Rep. Joe Baca, D-Rialto, represented the 62nd from 2004 through 2006, when he lost the Democratic primary for state Senate. He successfully ran later that year for the Rialto City Council, where he still serves.

In his candidate questionnaire for The Press-Enterprise, Baca Jr. said his top priorities as a lawmaker would be to encourage the creation of jobs through repealing “overly burdensome” regulations, increasing funding for community colleges, and approving public-works projects.

Newspaper publisher Cheryl Brown, of Rialto, a fellow Democrat, is Baca’s main rival. Brown is backed by the lawmakers who represented the area in the Assembly before and after Baca Jr.: John Longville and Assemblywoman Wilmer Amina Carter, D-Rialto.

Fixing the state’s chronically imbalanced budget is paramount, Brown said in her candidate questionnaire for The Press-Enterprise. She said she also wants to attract businesses and improve education and health care in the district.

Also running for the 47th are two Republicans, Thelma E. Beach, of Grand Terrace, a retiree, and Jeane Ensley, of Rialto, a retired fraud investigator.

In 2010, Carter defeated Ensley by almost 40 percentage points. And the redrawn district’s similarly strong Democratic leanings — Barack Obama won here by about 40 percentage points — means Brown and Baca Jr. could face each other again in the fall.

To the north, the 33rd Assembly District is much different from the district that Donnelly won in 2010 after his upset victory in a crowded Republican primary. The district’s politics still remain strongly Republican.

Yet instead of cruising to re-election, Donnelly, R-Twin Peaks, is among a handful of incumbents facing a strong challenge from within the party this year.

Bill Jahn, a Big Bear Republican, has put at least $140,000 of his own money into his campaign, according to state records. He also has received money from public-employee unions, some of whom also have made independent expenditures — outside the candidates’ campaigns — to support Jahn or oppose Donnelly.

The Assembly Republican Caucus has come to Donnelly’s aid.

Donnelly, one of the Legislature’s most conservative members and a vocal critic of illegal immigration, claims that unions are trying to silence his voice.

There also is a contested primary in the 52nd Assembly District, which stretches from Pomona to Fontana. Assemblywoman Norma Torres, D-Pomona, faces two Democrats — Paul Vincent Avila, of Ontario, and Ray Moors, of Chino — and Republican Kenny Coble, of Pomona.

Lego contests charm families in Tempe

May 14th, 2012

For Mother’s Day on Sunday, Stephanie Chavez got one of the best gifts of all: seeing her son filled with joy.

Ten-year-old Elias Chavez was at the beginning of the line for the first Lego-building competition of the day at Arizona Mills in Tempe.

“Legos are the greatest thing that’s happened to me,” said Elias, a student at Kyrene del Cielo grade school in Chandler.

Hourlong pirate-themed contests ran Saturday and Sunday, sponsored by Legoland California Resort to promote its new Pirate Reef water ride opening May 25.

Elias’ entire family came out for the event: mom, Stephanie; dad, Frank; and sister, Sophia, 6.

“This is a wonderful Mother’s Day present, to see (my son’s) main interest come to fruition,” Stephanie said. “I’m trying to stay in the moment and enjoy the experience.”

Elias, who received his first Lego kit on his fourth birthday, used a variety of Lego bricks to build a scene of two pirate ships attacking each other.

“One is on fire,” he said, pointing to the flames.

A pirate ship sinking in blue water was created by his dad, who said, “It brought the kid out in me.”

Elias’ mother produced what she described as a “turbo waterslide,” complete with moving parts.

About 300 people participated Saturday, and a similar-size crowd was expected Sunday in three age categories. Winners received trips to Legoland in Carlsbad, Calif., north of San Diego.

One of the oldest competitors Sunday was Dave Alcorn, 65, of Apache Junction, who was persuaded to get involved with his grandchildren, Tyler Kropp, 10, and Madison Kropp, 7, of Mesa.

“All the kids were pretty excited, so I had a good time,” Alcorn said.

Among the youngest competitors was 2-year-old Liam Leary, son of Andrew and Jessica Leary of Casa Grande.

Another family at Sunday’s event were the Beatingos of Phoenix: Ian and Carolyn and their son, Isaiah, 8, who likes to create dragons.

“He works with Legos every day after school … and he goes to tournaments where there are Lego stores.”

That includes Arrowhead Towne Center in Glendale and Chandler Fashion Center.

The competition’s emcee, Legoland spokesman Jake Gonzales, announced to the enthusiastic crowd: “You can do this for a living. You can make it a full-time job and career.”

With that, he pointed to master builder Ryan Ziegelbauer, 32, who judged the competition at the end of the weekend.

Ziegelbauer, who is based at Legoland, has been a master builder for two years. He has been building with Lego bricks since he was 3, when his first project was a 50-piece moon rover.

“I was immediately hooked,” he recalled. “Legos were the only toys my brother and I ever wanted.”

Ziegelbauer, who got a master’s degree studying urban planning at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, won his job from among thousands of applicants.

Among his lifetime of Lego creations, his favorite was an intellectually challenging life-size human skull that required him to study anatomy books.

The professional Lego builder has a tip for amateur builders:

“Every time you build a model, take photos, because sometimes you forget. I built a helicopter when I was 10 that I wish I could remember.”

Ron Paul to stop campaigning in state primary contests

May 14th, 2012

Texas Republican Rep. Ron Paul will no longer compete in primary states, in an effort to concentrate on picking up more delegates before the Republican convention in August.

“Our campaign will continue to work in the state convention process,” said Paul, who has chosen not to run for re-election in his House seat, in an email sent to reporters Monday afternoon. (RELATED: Full coverage of the Paul campaign)

Paul added that his campaign “will continue to take leadership positions, win delegates, and carry a strong message to the Republican National Convention that Liberty is the way of the future.”

“We will no longer spend resources campaigning in primaries in states that have not yet voted,” the email continued. “Doing so with any hope of success would take many tens of millions of dollars we simply do not have. I encourage all supporters of Liberty to make sure you get to the polls and make your voices heard, particularly in the local, state, and Congressional elections, where so many defenders of Freedom are fighting and need your support.”

Eleven states, including delegate-rich Texas and California, are still yet to hold their primary contests. The Nebraska and Oregon primaries will take place Tuesday.

The email added that the Paul campaign would reveal its delegate strategy to supporters “soon.”
